I launched NovaWorks, my freelance content marketing business, with one clear goal: to help companies tell their stories and grow. What I didn’t expect was how much joy I’d find in building something entirely my own, even during those moments when big wins felt far away.
Balancing a business and a full-time job isn’t easy. My 10:30 AM to 7 PM work schedule doesn’t leave much free time, but as soon as I clock out, I dive straight into NovaWorks. The grind is intense, but the sense of accomplishment keeps me motivated.
Being outspoken and free-spirited, I realized working for others long-term isn’t for me. Creating NovaWorks feels like the natural next step—a chance to create something meaningful, let my creativity flow, and take control of my future.
The Big Win
Less than a month after launching NovaWorks, I searched “Content Marketing Ottawa” on Yahoo. My business showed up on the first page out of over 850,000 results, to my amazement!
That moment blew me away. Although it might seem small to some, it was huge to me. Yahoo may not be the most popular search engine anymore, but it was a big deal when I first started using the Internet (hello, ICQ days). Seeing my business there felt like a full-circle moment.
Building something and gaining traction and visibility feels incredible at this stage of my life. That kind of “wow factor” makes every late night and early morning worth it.
The Strategies Behind My Success
Making your SEO and online presence stand out takes a bit of dedicated effort. Here are some of the strategies I used to achieve this success.
- Keyword Research: I identified key terms, such as content marketing Ottawa, and integrated them naturally into my website and blog.
- Optimized Content Creation: I ensured every content provided value while being SEO-friendly.
- Consistency: I regularly updated my website, blog, and social media to stay relevant and visible.

- Self-Doubt: There are moments when I question whether I’m doing enough. I counter this by focusing on my achievements so far.
I’m still overcoming these hurdles, but each step forward brings me closer to my goals.

Running a one-person business means relying on what brings me joy and creativity.

(Though let’s be honest, sometimes they’re little shits–can I say that here?) Whether they help or make my workday longer, they keep life interesting.
My partner also plays a huge role. He’s my cheerleader, sounding board, and unofficial editor. His creativity and writing skills are a huge help in how I get things done. Having someone who believes in me keeps me going, especially on tough days.
